Temilade Openiyi whose stage name is tems Is a Nigerian record producer and Afrobeat singer-songwriter.Tems was born on the 11th of July, 1995, in Lagos, into a family of a Nigerian mum and British father. Her father left her mum at age  5,  she was raised by her single mum. After her primary education which she did in Lagos, she attended Dowen College in Lekki. She later moved to Johannesburg to study Economics at a South African university. She took the basic steps to become an award-winning singer .during her childhood days, she recorded songs with her school choir and practiced with her brother’s guitar. According to a documentary with MU Narratives, she recounted how her music teacher encouraged her to sing with her real voice when she doubted her capability.

Temilade Openiyi whose stage name is tems .grew up singing in her church choir in 2009 and rose to become one of the young famous singers in Nigeria. The success of her 2019’s Try Me saw her emerge into a big name in the music industry. Also, the fact that she released a song with American musician Khalid and Nigerian hip hop star Davido, she landed herself right in the hall of fame. she came to the limelight at  20.  when She released her first EP, “Time Swap EP” in 2013. Her first recognized single, “Mr. Rebel”, a song that got more than 200,000 views on youtube came after her album “Illumination” in 2018. She followed it up with another single, titled “Looku Looku” a song that was widely accepted and Nigerian radio stations gave it enough air-plays. She measured up with another hit single, “Try me”, and solidified her name in the hall of fame. Try me by Tems was released in August 2019 and has gained more than 2 million views on Youtube alone.

Speaking in an interview with Fader.com, she revealed that she did not want to go to school initially so that she could focus on her music career.

She said, “I tried to not go to school so I could pursue my career. That didn’t bang. But I did everything I could.

“When my mum applied to different universities and they would email me, I wouldn’t tell her till the deadline passes and I’ll be like, “Oh well the deadline passed, I might as well just stay home.

“I tried that but she didn’t accept. She applied to a school in South Africa which had already started the session that year, but they allowed me to enrol. So I went like a week later,” she said.

At some point, she learned music production. When asked why she decided to learn music production, she said,

“One holiday I came back and I wanted to work with a producer and all the producers I tried to talk to had a lot of conditions.

“It’s either you have to give something, and I didn’t have money, and anything else is disgusting to me. I was just like Na wa, would I be struggling because I want to make one beat.

“Since I knew what I was looking for, I decided to learn how to myself. I started watching videos on YouTube and got onto it pretty quickly,” she said.

Tems also likes fashion, and crocheting. She used to make crochet crop tops but that has been on hold because of her music. Tems loves eating and according to her, she is in a love-hate relationship with food
